Birdie. Birdie? How did a score of one under par get that name? In the 19th Century a 'birdie' was a term equivalent to 'cool' or 'excellent'. In 1903, at the Atlantic City Club, a reported conversation of a threesome who were playing the par 3 second hole, put his shot inches from the cup. One of the players said that was a 'bird of a shot' and the group referred to a score of one under par as a 'birdie.
And if a 'Birdie' is very cool, then a two under par being better, must be an 'Eagle'.
I'll repeat this again because it's worth it :) The name "Grip It and Rip It" came from a former golf partner that said this, most frequently, when we were on a difficult hole and her ball was already out of play, the pond, woods, or out of bounds. Thanks Buddy :)
